Bank of China
Invited Competition - Winning Entry

Martin Reynolds designed this winning scheme for a new bank and mixed use facilities while working with a Hong Kong Practice. There were planning restrictions on tower buildings which required them to be built within the parameters of two squares on opposite sides of the site.

The design response was to create two eliptical towers within these squares, inspired by the ancient 'Golden Nugget' Chinese currency to create a distinctive silhouette within the townscape. The retail spaces between the towers have canopies sloping between them, which symbolise Feng Shui principles of strength and integrity.

Martin Reynolds designed this winning scheme for a 450 bedroom hotel and 500 seat conference and sports centre while working for a London Practice. Over 100 international entries were received.

The concept was a modern interpretation of a desert citadel. A continuous 'service' roof extends from a central courtyard over the whole site. This is punctuated with smaller courtyards with function rooms grouped around them. Service ducts run through the roof to these facilities. A series of internal 'streets' radiate from the central courtyard which forms a hotel atrium with bedrooms arranged around it to form a huge inverted pyramid. This shades surrounding spaces from the intense sun. Galleried walkways give access to the hotel bedrooms around a huge atrium above the entrance below.

Martin Reynolds's design for a national ideas competition in Lewes, Sussex was awarded Third place out of 90 entries.

The competition brief was to propose a design and use for a vacant riverside site surrounded by warehouses. He proposed a boutique hotel and art gallery linked by a footbridge. The design created a modern interpretation of the warehouse venacular with gabled silhouettes mimicking other buildings along the river banks. An artificial pool runs parallel to the river from the hotel atrium extending out into an external courtyard; a calming influence
which complements the riverside location.   e

Martin Reynolds's design for a new Parliament building in Darwin, Australia's Northern Territory, came 9th out 92 wordwide entries.

The design  endeavours to create a symbol of democracy. The cylindrical debating Chamber is located within a 'Great Hall' roofed under a huge hyperbolic paraboloid with MP's rooms and ancillary functions grouped around it. The aim was to encourage the public to make use of the space to engage with MP's and media outlets and create a more open approach to government. The Chamber ceiling forms a circular Desert Rose, symbol of the Northern Territory.
