Atkins House SW19

MR Design were appointed to remodel a 1930's house for a previous client. The design involved complete renovation on all floors and new extensions on the ground floor, side and roof to accommodate living-dining areas, kitchen, bedrooms and a new staircase. The house was in poor condition so there were few constaints other than planning requirements to respect neighbouring properties.

The client wanted a very modern house. A continuous glass roof created a visual separation between the existing house and the new ground floor extension, allowing daylight to penetrate into the original rear rooms. The ground floor extension with the kitchen-dining area, was designed to create a strong relationship between the interior and the large rear terrace and garden with deep overhanging roof shading the extensively glazed rear elevation.

The main focal point of the house is a double height entrance hall featuring a spectacular modern staircase rising throungh all floors. The main roof space was converted into a large loft master bedroom with bathroom en-suite.and glazed Julliet balconies overlooking the garden.
